Whether you’re considering breast implant removal for personal reasons or because of a problem with your implants, you may be concerned about how your breasts will look after the implants are removed.

Your breasts will certainly be smaller without the implants. In fact, they’ll return to the size they were before the implants were placed. But they won’t necessarily return to their former shape. For one thing, you are older now, and aging affects the form of the breasts — they tend to sag over time. If you’ve had children or gained and lost weight, that can add to the drooping effect. The implants themselves will also have caused your skin to stretch, and they may have displaced the tissue inside your breasts. It’s common for breasts to appear deflated after implants are removed, and yours may have a hollowed look where the implants were.

Some of these immediate effects will improve with time as your breast tissue naturally shifts and settles. Other changes may need correction with plastic surgery to give you a look you feel great about. Here are four aesthetic options you may want to consider either as part of or after your breast implant removal.

1. Breast Lift

Many women who have implants removed choose to have a breast lift at the same time, especially when the implants were large. A breast lift removes excess skin that has been stretched from the implants — or simply due to aging or weight changes — and restores a more youthful shape.

The term “breast lift” covers a wide range of procedures that reshape the breasts and eliminate sagging. It almost always includes raising the profile of the breast and moving the areolas to a higher position. It can also reduce the size of the areolas to be in better proportion with the breasts after implant removal. A breast lift will also reshape the tissue inside the breasts to correct any contour irregularities, such as the hollows that can be left where the implants once sat. If the implants displaced tissue to the sides or bottom of the breast, the procedure can pull this tissue back into the upper center of the breast for a naturally rounded look.

2. Fat Transfer

Fat transfer moves fat from a part of the body where you have excess — around your middle or on your thighs, for example — to a place where you need more volume. After breast implant removal, fat transfer can be used to give your breasts a fuller, rounder look.

The fat transfer process uses liposuction to harvest fat from a part of the body you’d like reshaped. The fat tissue is then processed for insertion into the area that needs more volume. The beauty of the procedure is that it offers both slimming and rounding results in different parts of the body and the augmentation to your breasts is made with your own tissue. The results are attractive and long-lasting and can add significantly to your breast volume.

3. Pectoral Muscle Adjustment

Some women who have had breast implants placed beneath the chest wall muscles (known as subpectoral placement) experience problems with the pectoral muscles that may need to be corrected after implant removal. The most common concern is the minor weakening of the muscles, which has resulted from their stretching over the implant. This is typically corrected naturally, with exercise, once the implants are removed. A more troubling — though rare — problem happens when the muscles are displaced by the implant. This can cause the breasts to take on a distorted appearance when the chest muscles are flexed. If this has happened to you, an additional procedure may be needed with implant removal to reposition and reattach the pectoral muscles in their normal position on the chest wall.

4. Replacement Implants

Depending on your reason for having breast implants removed, you might consider replacing them with implants of a different size, shape, or type. This can be a way to change your breasts to a look that suits your current desires or to replace an implant that concerns you for health reasons with one that feels safer.

The steps involved in the breast implant removal surgery preparation will be quite similar to the original breast enhancement procedure. The surgeon will discuss these steps thoroughly with the surgeon during the pre-op consultation.

Patients who understand the procedure and are well-prepared tend to experience lesser pre-operative anxiety. They also have a better chance of achieving safe and effective outcomes. plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides breast implant removal to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA, and surrounding communities.

Preparation Guidelines

The below-mentioned guidelines will enable patients to prepare appropriately for breast implant removal:

The surgeon’s administrative staff may provide the patient with a copy of common surgery instructions or do’s and don’ts to allow the patient to prepare for her breast implant removal surgery. These guidelines may include the following:

Some patients may experience post-operative anxiety and stress a day before the procedure. Breast Implant Removal Risks And Safety | Beverly Hills | Los AngelesA woman may need a breast revision cosmetic surgery if she seeks to have her implants removed or replaced because of damage or a change in her aesthetic preferences. Similar to any surgical procedure, breast implant removal surgery has associated risks.

Patients should understand that breast implant removal may sometimes be a more complicated procedure than the original breast augmentation. plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides breast implant removal to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA, and surrounding locations.

Potential Surgical Complications

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will discuss the potential risks and complications of a breast implant removal surgery with the patient. The patient should also cautiously follow the surgeon’s pre and post-op guidelines in a dedicated manner to minimize these risks. The primary complications related to this procedure are:

Risks Associated with Breast Implant Removal

In general, breast implant removal is fairly straightforward plastic surgery. But it may have to be performed in addition to a breast lift for desirable outcomes. Patients may, in exceptional cases, may experience the below-mentioned complications during or after implant removal surgery:

The breast may not look the same as they did prior to the breast enlargement procedure. The patient may experience some breast deformity and sagginess, especially in case of more substantial implants. If a breast lift is performed along with the breast removal procedure, it can correct undesirable aesthetic outcomes in such cases.

Certain patients may find that their natural breasts look smaller after the implant removal than what they recall. The reason for this occurrence could be due to hormonal fluctuations or weight loss that happened when the patient underwent their original breast augmentation procedure. Patients should have reasonable expectations from breast removal surgery for effective outcomes.

Breast Implant Replacement Risks

The risks associated with breast implant replacement are the same as those associated with the primary breast augmentation procedure. In rare circumstances, breast implant replacement surgery may lead to these complications:

Women seek larger sized implants for their breast revision surgery may experience more discomfort as the body takes time to adjust itself to the new, bigger implants. Moreover, the positioning of larger implants is more complex and invasive.

The procedure will also involve the creation of new breast pockets to hold the larger implants. They may also have to change the placement position of the implants, causing a slight increase in the risk of complications.

It is important for a patient to realize that any breast revision surgery will involve some level of risk. Therefore, she should only seek implant replacement if she experiences a complication or seeks to change her breast size. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA, and nearby areas for breast implant removal.

It’s a big decision to have a breast lift. It’s an investment in yourself that can give you a huge boost to your self-esteem. And you want the results to last.

Clearly, you need to follow your doctor’s guidance in the days and weeks immediately after the procedure to promote healing and optimal results. But what steps can you take longer-term to help your breasts stay perky?

Here are some habits you can adopt at home to maintain your youthful shape.

Maintain Your Weight With Healthy Eating

The see-saw effects of weight gain and loss can take a big toll on the appearance of your breasts. Weight fluctuations cause the skin on your breasts and the supportive tissue inside to stretch and contract. Over time, this leads to a loss of elasticity and sagging.

Diet and exercise both contribute to weight changes. Exercise is important to your health, and we’ll get to that next. But healthy eating habits are a powerful factor in tipping the scales in the right direction.

If you want to keep your breasts in their newly perky form, it’s important to break the cycle of seasonal dieting and weight gain. Instead, get into the habit of eating healthy food in moderate portions as your new normal. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Switch to whole grains and stay away from refined carbohydrates. Drink water throughout the day. Keep unhealthy foods, like ice cream and fattening desserts, out of your house to eliminate temptation.

Once healthy eating becomes a habit, you’ll find that you enjoy eating better-quality food and that you have more energy. Good nutrition also contributes to healthy skin and is critical to your overall well-being.

Exercise

You know that exercise is important to your overall health. The right kinds of exercise habits can also help you maintain the perkiness of the breasts.

First, we should dispel a myth. Many women avoid vigorous exercise out of fear that the bouncing will cause their breasts to sag. However, there is no connection between bouncing and breast sag. Especially with the use of a supportive sports bra, you shouldn’t worry about any exercise negatively impacting your breasts. On the other hand, there are loads of scientific evidence tying exercise to maintaining a healthy weight. And maintaining your weight is key to keeping your youthful breast shape and position.

So find a way to work regular exercise into your daily and weekly routine until it becomes a habit — something you do to feel good rather than something you have to force yourself to do.

Certain muscle-strengthening exercises can also help firm up the shape of your chest and improve your posture, both of which can have a modest effect on maintaining your breast-lift results. These include bench presses with dumbells, push-ups, and planks. If you belong to a gym, a trainer can show you other exercises to improve your upper body posture and strengthen your pectoral muscles, the muscles that lie just below your breasts.

Take Care of Your Skin

Use quality moisturizers and sunscreen to help your skin stay strong and firm. Skin tone and elasticity are factors in breast droop, and exposure to the sun’s UV rays is one of the biggest factors in skin damage. The chest is a common spot for sunburn, and that can weaken and coarsen the skin on your breasts.

Make it a habit to keep your skin moisturized. Use sunscreen regularly and avoid harmful overexposure to the sun.

Wear a Well-Fitted Bra

You’ll need to wear a supportive bra while you heal from your breast lift. After that, a well-fitted bra continues to be important, but for different reasons. Bras that give too much lift can actually weaken the muscles supporting your breasts. They may look great while you’re wearing them but aren’t the best option for everyday use. Instead, get yourself fitted with bras that provide some support but that allow breasts to do some of the work themselves. It’s worth getting a professional fitting at a lingerie store now that your breasts have been reshaped. The bras you had from before your surgery may not be providing the support you need.

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon About Breast Implant Removal | Los AngelesSometimes breast implants may become constricted, displaced, or ruptured due to incorrect placement or pressure exerted by scar tissue. Women with such issues may require a breast implant removal surgery.

The patient will have an opportunity to ask the surgeon questions as well as express her concerns about the surgeon’s credentials or the breast implant removal procedure at the time of the initial consultation process.

plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides breast implant removal to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA, and surrounding locations.

Are you in plastic surgery?

A complex procedure such as breast implant removal cosmetic surgery should ideally be performed by a highly qualified, experienced, and cosmetic surgeon.

plastic surgeons usually invest in the highest possible quality standards and medical best practices, adopt innovative surgical techniques, pursue ongoing education, and follow the latest safety protocols to offer their patients with excellent outcomes.

Have you performed breast implant revisions previously?

The field of plastic surgery is quite vast, where some surgeons may be specialists in facial and body surgeries, but not as well-versed in breast-related procedures. Ideally, the patient should work with a surgeon with extensive experience and a proven track record of successful breast surgery results to attain the best possible outcomes.

Would you advise breast lift along with breast implant removal in my case?

Before the breast implant revision cosmetic surgery, the surgeon will understand the complications pertaining to the patient’s breast enhancement and recommend an appropriate course of action.

In case the patient chooses to have their implants replaced, the surgeon will recommend cosmetic surgery options such as breast lift surgery, which can be performed along with the implant removal. If the patient has loose breast skin due to prolonged stretching by the implants, she may also need a breast lift simultaneously with the removal.

What are the approximate breast implant removal costs at your practice?

In general, breast implant removal is performed as elective cosmetic surgery. For this reason, the patient will likely not be eligible to receive insurance coverage for this procedure. This makes the cost of breast implant removal an important factor for many patients to be able to make a judicious decision on this surgery.

What are the risks associated with breast implant removal surgery?

Breast implant removal has some inherent risks and complications related to it, similar to any surgical procedure. There should not be any ambiguity about this. It’s vital for the patient to understand the potential risks and side effects associated with the procedure before making a final decision.

Which types of breast implants can be removed easily?

The surgeon may deflate saline implants before removing them to enable easier removal. In comparison to the initial implant placement, implant removal may be more complex.

This case is particularly true if the outer shell of the implants is textured or foam covered. Sometimes, in addition to the implant, the surgeon may also remove the adjacent tissue and muscle.

How extended and painful will the recovery stage be?

The recovery period is an important part of any breast revision procedure. The patient should have clarity on the approximate downtime associated with the surgery and comprehend when she will be able to experience the final outcomes. Patients should budget for a minimum of one week of leave from work and/or social events to recover from this procedure.

“Side boob” has entered the fashion lexicon as a term for outfits that reveal the sides of the breasts — and it has been a hot trend for the past few years. It’s the new cleavage, shifting the peek from the center to the sides. Look back at pictures of Reese Witherspoon in a Jason Wu for Hugo Boss dress at the 2014 Vanity Fair Oscar party, or Gwynneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lawrence in their Oscar dresses. Since then, other stars and personalities have jumped on the trend, notably Kate Hudson, Kendall Jenner, Rihanna, Bella Hadid, and Kim and Chloe Kardashian.

How do they pull it off? And could you?

Side-Boob Dressing Tips

The side-boob look can be super sexy if you do it right. But you’ll need to be careful if you want to keep it tasteful — and avoid a wardrobe malfunction. Here are some of the secrets:

When doing a top reveal, whether it’s deep cleavage or a side boob, it’s a good idea to keep the rest of your outfit conservative. You don’t want to overdo it and distract from the effect by showing too much leg, for example.

3 Ways to Enhance Your Silhouette

The other key to pulling off the side-boob look, of course, is your breasts. Some women have the natural curves for an alluring side-boob peek, while others don’t. If you need a bit more volume or less sag to rock with this look, consider a breast lift or breast augmentation with implants or fat grafting.

Breast Lift

A breast lift gets rid of the droop and gives your boobs a younger-looking projection. An outfit with side-boob exposure is going to show how your breasts have sagged with age, weight changes, or motherhood, or how their volume has shifted from top to bottom. A breast lift raises and reshapes your breasts so you’ll feel confident about that peek.

Breast Augmentation With Implants

Breast implants enhance the size and shape of your breasts for a sexier look. A successful side-boob look doesn’t require huge breasts — it can be a knockout with B cups — but it does look better with a noticeably round shape. The goal should be to choose a size and form that fits naturally with your body, and that looks great with a bit of reveal.

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting is another, subtler way to enhance your silhouette. A talented plastic surgeon can remove excess fat from a donor area of your body using liposuction, then processes and injects the fat cells into parts of the breasts that need a volume boost. The results are long-lasting and use only your body’s fat tissue. Fat grafting has a double advantage of slimming with liposuction, while simultaneously building more roundness in your breasts.

Combining two procedures — a breast lift with either type of augmentation — can be a great way to sculpt your breasts for optimal effect.

Imagine feeling so confident about your body and so secure in your sexy silhouette that you delight in turning heads with a stunning side-boob outfit!

What to Expect During Your Implant Removal Consultation | Beverly HillsWomen who are unhappy with the results of their breast enhancement or those who suffer from breast implant complications may be good candidates for saline or silicone breast implant removal plastic surgery. In case the original breast enlargement was not performed properly, this procedure might become necessary.

plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides breast implant removal to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA, and surrounding communities.

Choosing between Implant Removal and Replacement

Prior to the breast implant removal surgery, the surgeon will understand the reasons for the implant complications and advise patients on a suitable course of action.

If the patient decides to undergo breast implant replacement, this procedure will be undertaken during the implant removal procedure. But if the patient needs only breast implant removal, the surgeon will advise them on cosmetic surgery options such as breast lift surgery. These can be performed in combination with breast implant removal surgery.

The surgeon will assess the implants and the adjacent tissue for swelling, leakage, rupture, and infection before the surgery.

Offering the Patient In-depth Information

During the pre-op consultation, a committed surgeon will educate the patient on all aspects of breast implant removal to allow her to make a judicious decision. The surgeon will discuss the breast implant removal surgery benefits, risks, procedure steps, and the approximate recovery duration after the procedure.

The surgeon will also make sure that the patient is seeking this procedure without any pressure or influence from external sources. Patients who have detailed information on breast implant surgery usually make a well-considered decision on the procedure as well as attain higher levels of satisfaction.

Good Candidates

A key goal for the surgeon during a breast implant removal consultation will be to determine the patient’s candidacy for this procedure. The surgeon will undertake a general medical examination and evaluate the structure of the breast as well as the skin texture and elasticity.

The surgeon will assess the surgical and medical history of the patient and may order medical tests if necessary. They will include the patient’s cosmetic goals into the personalized breast surgery plan.

Instructions for Preparation and Recovery

Patients who smoke will need to refrain from smoking for several weeks before and after the breast implant removal cosmetic surgery. Pertaining to this, the surgeon may change the patient’s schedule for prescription drugs, blood thinners, and herbal supplements in discussion with the prescribing physician.

Creating Reasonable Expectations

At the time of the pre-operative consultation process, certain surgeons may display before and after breast implant surgery images of past patients to help her develop realistic expectations from the procedure. Patients with reasonable expectations are usually more satisfied with the final results and feel more confident.

In regards to this, the surgeon may also show the patient testimonials of previous patients to learn more about the surgical procedure from the standpoint of another patient. The patient may also request a brief office tour to familiarize herself with the surgeon’s practice which can help build confidence that the surgeon runs a tight ship and cares about their patients and practice.

You’re happy with your lean runner’s body, but wish you had more of a figure up top. If you’ve dismissed breast augmentation as a change that would get in the way of your fitness goals, think again. With the right choices, you can have it all — a more feminine figure and a commitment to healthy physical activity. A significant number of competitive runners and cyclists have had breast augmentation surgery for the same reason, and carried on with their push for faster times.

In this article, we’ll discuss some key choices and answer some commonly asked questions.

Freedom of Movement

Size and shape matter in breast implants, both for your looks and for your ability to run with comfort. To avoid any interference with your arm movement while you run, you’ll want to minimize “spill-out” to the sides of your breasts. You also want to avoid adding too much weight to your chest with overly large implants to avoid back strain and chafing, not to mention slowing your uphill pace.

If your body is lean from running, you’re probably not looking for a big increase in breast size anyway — it could give you an unbalanced appearance. So you might think C cup rather than D cup. That’s in keeping with an overall trend of more modest augmentations. If you do go for a larger size, a well-fitted sports bra can help you stay comfortable on the road and track.

Talk with the surgeon, too, about the shape of the implants. A higher-profile implant — one with a narrower base and more forward projection — will have less spread to the sides than will a lower-profile implant — one with a wide base. Of course, the choice of implant size and shape should be whatever provides the most natural fit with your anatomy.

Placement

A surgeon can place breast implants either beneath the chest wall muscles (subpectoral placement) or above them (subglandular placement), and each choice has its advantages.

If you lift weights or are a competitive sprinter, subglandular placement is probably the better choice. When implants are below the muscles, the intense contractions involved in building upper-body strength can distort the implants or shift their position.

If you’re like most runners, with a slender upper body profile and no plans for a more muscular chest, subpectoral placement may be more comfortable. But either placement option should be fine. Your plastic surgeon can explain which of the options will give you the most natural breast look and feel.

Silicone or Saline?

The choice of silicone or saline implants is another decision with several factors to consider. If you are very thin, with little body fat or breast tissue, the softer silicone implants may produce a more natural look and feel than saline implants. But neither option has an absolute advantage for all runners.

Will Implants Hold up Under the Stresses of Running?

Some female athletes are concerned about the durability of implants. Remember, these are medical devices designed to withstand significant trauma, such as hitting the steering wheel in a car accident. So the movement of running won’t affect the implants themselves. To avoid stretching the skin of your breasts when running after augmentation, it’s a good idea to wear a well-fitting sports bra.

Timing

The timing of the procedure is the final consideration. You will need to have some downtime to heal. That means at least two weeks with no strenuous exercise, then a gradual buildup to your normal training and competition routine.

Many runners schedule the procedure soon after their most important race of the year, when they will have downtime for physical recovery anyway. Or, they plan the procedure for the winter months, when they would ordinarily be on a lighter training routine.

As you begin to resume your running routine, get a professional fitting for a sports bra with extra support. With appropriate care, and without pushing yourself too hard or too fast, you should be back in your normal routine in a few weeks.

Breast Implant Removal Candidates | Beverly Hills | Los AngelesAfter the breast augmentation procedure, a woman may seek breast implant removal surgery at any stage due to a variety of causes, including cosmetic, emotional, and medical reasons. It is vital for women considering a breast implant removal to be in suitable health. She should also not be pregnant or nursing.

plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides breast implant removal to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA, and surrounding locations.

Removal due to Improper Implants

The primary breast augmentation cosmetic surgery may not always offer outcomes that are satisfactory for the patient due to various reasons, such as inappropriate implant shape, size, or type.

Sometimes (in rare cases), the woman may feel that she felt happier with her natural breast shape, or that the bigger breasts are adversely affecting her ability to perform certain tasks.

Patients experiencing such problems may be good candidates for breast implant removal surgery. The woman may, at times, be unhappy with the size, type, or shape of her implants.

A woman may feel that the implants are excessively large or too small. She may find the shape or profile unsuitable to her. Such women may be good candidates for breast implant removal surgery, as well. Sometimes the patient may choose to get new, more appropriate implants after implant removal.

The FDA approved silicone breast implants a few years after saline implants were approved by the FDA. Some patients may decide to have their saline implants replaced with silicone ones.

Surgical Complications Requiring Removal

A woman may also experience complications associated with breast implants after her breast enlargement plastic surgery, which may occur at any time after the primary procedure.

The risk of complications is significantly reduced when an experienced and skilled breast surgeon undertakes the procedure. However, complications may still occur, even years after the primary augmentation surgery.

Capsular contracture refers to the hardening of the scar tissue around the implant. In such cases, the patient will need to undergo scar tissue or implant removal surgery to correct this condition.

Furthermore, they may decide to receive implant replacement after the removal procedure. The implants may rupture, leak, or deflate due to a defective implant or natural wear and tear.

Implant rippling may occur due to the thinning of the skin across the breasts or hormonal changes. At times, the breast implant may move from its original placement to create a lop-sided appearance. In such cases, the patient will require breast implant surgery.

Other Candidates for Breast Implant Removal

Breast removal surgery may be performed for other reasons as well, such as a cancer diagnosis. In such cases, breast implant removal will be required to ensure the efficacy of cancer treatment. Some women seek breast implant removal because of changing aesthetic preferences or lifestyle.

Breast Implant Removal | Beverly Hills | Los Angeles | West HollywoodSaline or silicone breast implant removal cosmetic surgery may be an appropriate solution for women who are unhappy with the results of their primary breast augmentation

If the original breast implant procedure was done improperly, it may be necessary for the patient to undergo breast implant removal. Breast implants may become hardened or displaced due to incorrect placement or pressure from scar tissue.

Correlating with this, the procedure may also be necessary if the implants rupture or deflate due to a defective implant or an injury. In case an infection develops, breast implants may also need to be removed. plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides breast implant removal to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA, and surrounding communities.

What does Breast Implant Removal Surgery involve?

Before proceeding with the breast implant removal process, the surgeon will evaluate the causes of the implant complications and recommend a course of treatment to the patient. If the patient chooses to have her silicone or saline implants replaced with a different type or size of breast implant, the replacement can be performed as an independent procedure.

If the patient, however, decides to have her implants removed, the surgeon will advise her about options such as breast lift plastic surgery, which can be performed simultaneously with the removal procedure.

The surgeon will likely undertake the procedure using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. To attain access to the implant, the surgeon will place an incision in one of the following areas:

The incisions involved in breast implant removal are usually the same as the ones made during the original breast augmentation surgery. The surgeon will typically also remove scar tissue as well as the breast implant during this procedure.

Saline Breast Implant Removal

The surgeon may deflate the implant before removing it during saline revision surgery to allow easier removal. Once the implant has been removed, the surgeon will remove scar tissue from the previous breast enlargement procedure.

As soon as the original implant is removed, the placement of new implants or breast lift surgery will take place. It takes between 30 to 45 minutes to complete the surgery. Following the procedure, the patient will remain in the hospital for a few hours under observation.

Silicone Breast Implant Removal

A silicone implant that ruptures may go undetected. Therefore, the surgeon will perform a manual exam to check the implant for any signs of distress or rupture before removing it during silicone revision surgery. This minimizes any risks related to the breast implant procedure.

Implant removal may be more complicated than the primary enhancement procedure, especially when the outer shell is textured or foam covered. Sometimes the adjacent tissue and muscle may also need to be removed in addition to the implant.

During the removal, the patient may also receive a breast implant replacement, breast lift, or scar revision. The time taken to complete the implant removal procedure depends on whether other procedures are being undertaken simultaneously. It usually takes less than one hour to remove silicone breast implants.
