Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty is a relatively less invasive cosmetic surgery which involves minimal risk of post-operative complications in the hands of an experienced and skilled surgeon.

However, the patient will need to follow some instructions during the recovery stage after their eyelid surgery.

The surgeon’s guidelines will ensure that the patient experiences a safe and speedy recovery. The surgeon will explain various facets of blepharoplasty and the recovery process to the patient at the time of the pre-operative consultation.

plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides eyelid lift to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Recovery Stage

The surgeon will often undertake eyelid surgery as an outpatient procedure. But in rare cases, the patient may need to stay overnight at the hospital.

The right approach to the post-op recovery stage will be determined according to the surgeon’s assessment of the patient’s needs. Most patients will need to remain at home for around one week following the procedure.

A majority of patients can return to their normal activities or work after a week. However, the eyelid may take many weeks to fully heal after the blepharoplasty procedure. If the surgeon places traditional sutures, they will remove these after the initial week.

The patient should allow the eyes proper rest during the first week. The redness and inflammation will be more obvious during the first week, but will slowly resolve.

The eyes may get tired due to reading, watching TV, or working on a computer during the early recovery stage. Patients should avoid such exertion during the initial recovery phase as it may increase the blood supply to the eyes and cause delayed healing.

Once the inflammation and bruising resolve, the patient will enjoy a more alert and youthful upper face appearance.

The eyes will seem rejuvenated and alert as the complete results of the eyelid lift plastic surgery manifest. This procedure is an effective treatment for patients who experience partial vision obstruction due to sagging upper lids.

Temporary Side Effects

Inflammation and redness in the region around the incisions is a common surgical side-effect. The patient may experience dryness, itching, and soreness in these areas as well as excessive tearing in the eyes. The surgeon may prescribe a topical ointment and pain med to allow the patient to remain comfortable as these temporary side effects resolve.

Some patients may feel more sensitive to light or experience blurriness in their vision. These side-effects will resolve quickly if the patient carefully follows the surgeon’s post-operative instructions.

Aftercare

The patient can use cold compresses on the eyes during the first two or three days after the blepharoplasty surgery to help the inflammation subside. In addition, the surgeon may prescribe eye drops to the patient if they experience dry eyes.

The patient should protect their eyes from sun and wind exposure during the first few weeks after their eyelid surgery. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for eyelid lift.

How much does brow/forehead lift plastic surgery cost? | Beverly HillsA brow lift plastic surgery is designed to reposition sagging brows to create a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance for the upper face. At the time of the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will explain the various aspects of the surgery, including its approximate costs, to the patient.

The primary goal of a dedicated surgeon will be to inform the patient about every part of brow lift surgery to enable them to make a well-considered choice. The patient should assess and compare the costs of the procedure relative to the quality standards and customized care that a specific practice offers.

plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides forehead lift to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Cost Factors

The costs of brow lift surgery may vary marginally between practices, and at times, even between two patients at the same practice. The elements that affect the total cost of the procedure are as follows:

Geographical Location of the Practice

The location of the practice is a vital element that affects brow lift cosmetic surgery costs. In case the practice is located in a busy urban center or main metropolitan city, they will likely bear higher real estate and overhead costs compared to a practice located in a smaller town in the interiors.

Surgeon’s Fees

The charges of the cosmetic surgeon will usually vary depending on their background, experience, and reputation in the field of plastic surgery. In general, plastic surgeons who are invest in top-notch quality standards and best practices, adopt the most advanced surgical techniques, pursue on-going education, and follow the latest safety protocols.

Anesthesia and Surgical Venue Expenses

The brow lift cosmetic surgery may be performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. An anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist will administer the anesthesia, and their charges will vary based on their credentials.

The patient will typically be able to choose between a hospital and an accredited surgery center to undergo the brow lift surgery. Each option has associated costs and advantages.

Extent of Surgery

A brow lift can be undertaken using the traditional surgical technique or an endoscopic technique. An endoscopic brow lift is more advanced, less invasive, and develops more precise results. The procedure costs may vary depending on the technique used for the brow lift surgery.

At times, the surgeon may recommend that the patient receive a brow lift in combination with a facelift or an eyelid lift for more comprehensive results. The total procedure costs will be higher in such cases.

Insurance Aspect

Brow lift surgery is an elective procedure, and the patient will likely not receive insurance coverage for this surgery. However, patients who experience partial vision obstruction due to heavily sagging brows may be able to get coverage for this procedure. Patients should speak to their surgeon and insurance provider about this facet prior to the procedure.

Financing Options

The practice may accept major credit cards as a mode of payment. The patient can also consider financing options such as bank loans, or seek loans medical care financing companies at competitive rates of interest. These companies typically provide faster loan approvals and easy monthly installments of up to 60 months.

How to Prepare For Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) | Beverly HillsEyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is an effective treatment for loose upper eyelid skin, under-eye bags, and wrinkles and fine lines around the lids by eliminating excess skin and fat. The patient should prepare well for the plastic surgery to accomplish safe and successful results.

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will offer the patient instructions on blepharoplasty preparation. Well-prepared patients typically feel more confident and enjoy higher levels of satisfaction.

These patients are also able to cope with the procedure in a better manner as well as enjoy a relaxed recovery period.

plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides blepharoplasty to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities.

Informing the Patient

The surgeon will inform the patient about the various possible eyelid surgery techniques and treatment alternatives available to the patient. The patient should unhesitatingly ask the surgeon questions or express their doubts at the blepharoplasty procedure and the surgeon’s credentials. The surgeon will try to address the patient’s questions in an honest and transparent manner.

Medical Assessment

The surgeon will evaluate the patient’s health records, eye anatomy, degree of skin laxity in the lower and upper eyelids, the eyebrows and forehead region, and the skin texture and tone at the time of the initial consultation.

Additionally, they will check for any signs of infection in the eye region. At this time, the patient should volunteer information about any underlying medical conditions that they may have.

Full Disclosure

The patient should inform their surgeon if they have undergone any eye surgeries previously, including LASIK, or have experienced any significant eye conditions. In addition, they should tell the surgeon about all prescription and non-prescription medications that they currently use along with their lifestyle behaviors.

Pre- and Post-Operative Care Guidelines

The surgeon or their team will offer the patient detailed preparation guidelines for the blepharoplasty. Patients who are working professionals should account for a minimum of one week of leave from their workplace to recover from the eyelid surgery. Non-working patient should also schedule their social engagements accordingly.

The patient should ask a responsible person to drive them home following the cosmetic surgery procedure as well as arrange for aftercare for a few days if required.

Avoid Smoking and Certain Drugs

In case the patient smokes, the surgeon will ask them to quit smoking for a specified duration before and after the procedure. They may ask the patient to stop the use of blood thinners such as aspirin and NSAIDs or specific herbal supplements or vitamin E. They may also alter the schedule of prescription drugs in discussion with the prescribing physician.

Practical Arrangements Before the Surgery

If the patient feels that aftercare is necessary for the first few days of the recovery period after the eyelid surgery, they should arrange for it ahead of the procedure. Additionally, they should undertake any vital home or work-related tasks beforehand to enjoy a stress-free and relaxed recovery phase.

Patients may also create a recovery kit at home, including the following items:

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Risks And Safety | Beverly HillsAn eyelid lift is relatively simple plastic surgery when performed by an experienced surgeon. It is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. On their part, the patient should follow the preparatory and recovery stage instructions given by the surgeon in a dedicated manner for a result that the patient is impressed with and what they were expecting.

The eyes are a fragile body area, and receiving any surgery in this region should be an enlightened decision. The surgeon should explain to the patient about the potential risks and complications related to eyelid surgery during the pre-op consultation process.

plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides blepharoplasty to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Potential Complications

Some patients may potentially experience a complication during or after eyelid surgery. These complications may include hematoma, ectropion, and retinal detachment. But these complications occur only in rare cases.

However, the patient should have clarity on these possible risks. Ectropion refers to the drooping effect that causes inversion in the lower eyelids. Such patients may require revision surgery.

A hematoma is the accumulation of excess fluid in the incision sites beneath the skin. If the eyelid surgery is undertaken with another procedure such as facelift, or brow lift, the chances of hematoma development may be higher.

The surgeon may place tiny drain tubes beneath the skin in the incision areas to eliminate excess fluid and reduce the risk of hematoma development. In rare cases, the patient may suffer from retinal detachment, which involves the detachment of the retina from the outer eye layers.

Retinal holes or tears can lead to this condition, and the patient will need additional surgery to treat this condition.

Minor Complications

Some patients may experience one or more of the below mentioned complications following eyelid lift cosmetic surgery:

These complications resolve by themselves in most patients. However, patients may require treatment if the issue persists or leads to discomfort.

Common Side Effects

Pain, Discomfort, and Irritation

The patient may feel slight soreness or irritation in the incision areas during the initial post-surgical period. They may feel tautness or pain in the lids as the effects of the anesthesia wear off. For the initial week after the blepharoplasty, the surgeon may prescribe pain medications.

Inflammation

The patient can expect some amount of swelling in the week after the eyelid surgery. They can use ice therapy or cold compresses in the initial two to three days to address the inflammation. On top of this, the patient should keep their head in an elevated position for the first few days after the procedure.

Scarring

The patient will experience minimal scarring in most cases of eyelid surgery. The scars will not be visible externally if the surgeon places the incision within the lower lid. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for blepharoplasty.

Questions to Ask Before Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) | Los AngelesAlthough eyelid lift or blepharoplasty is a relatively minor cosmetic surgery, it is still a sensitive procedure as it involves the delicate eye region.

At the time of the pre-operative consultation, the patient should freely ask questions and educate themselves on various aspects of the procedure and the surgeon’s background prior to making a final decision.

Ideally, the patient should make a list of all their questions beforehand and carry it to the consultation. plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides blepharoplasty to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities.

Do you have a board certification in plastic surgery?

Ideally, the eyelid surgeon should have a board certification in plastic surgery. plastic surgeons usually invest in top-notch quality standards and best practices, pursue continuing education, and follow the latest safety protocols.

What number of years of training and experience do you possess in such procedures?

The patient should be clear on how much medical and surgical training the surgeon has as well as the actual hands-on experience that they have in the field of plastic surgery. It is vital to choose a surgeon with requisite expertise and skill, particularly for an intricate procedure such as blepharoplasty.

Have you undertaken eyelid lift or facial surgery previously?

Some plastic surgeons may have extensive expertise in the area of breast and body surgeries. But they may not be as proficient in facial, or particularly, eyelid related procedures. It is advisable for the patient to choose a surgeon with a detailed understanding of the facial and eye anatomy and has performed face and eye rejuvenation procedures previously.

Which surgical venue would you recommend for blepharoplasty?

The surgeon will usually have an option to undertake blepharoplasty at a hospital, an accredited surgical center, or a private surgical suite. The plastic surgeon should offer the patient these options and recommend the most appropriate venue, depending on the patient’s needs.

Would you use general or local anesthesia?

The surgeon may recommend the blepharoplasty procedure to be performed either under general anesthesia or local anesthesia. The patient should understand whether an anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist will administer the anesthesia and remain in the operating room throughout the procedure.

What are the potential risks and complications?

The patient should understand the possible risks and complications associated with eyelid surgery ahead of the procedure to make a judicious decision.

Questions about the Costs

The patient should make a final decision on the eyelid surgery only after they are completely satisfied with the surgeon’s answers to their questions. They may make a list of questions in advance and carry this list to the surgeon’s office to make sure that they do not miss out on any vital questions.

While the last several decades have seen countless innovations in modern plastic surgery, its hard to name a procedure that has changed as dramatically as breast augmentation. Within the last two decades alone, this cosmetic surgery has become less invasive and more personalized to each individual – factors that have allowed this procedure to quickly become one of the most popular plastic surgeries available. Whether you’ve been considering breast augmentation for a long time or are just now exploring your options, considers these reasons why the treatment is better now than ever before.

Better Surgical Techniques

Plastic surgery techniques have come a long way in the last five years, much less the decades since breast augmentation first gained popularity among female patients. Before, implant placement was a rigid procedure, with little accommodation for a patient’s unique figure.

Today, women have options at all stages of the surgery, starting with placement. Where patients were once restricted to a one-size-fits-all approach, new innovations in creating more aesthetic treatments mean that woman can choose where their incision is made to maximize discretion. For some, an inframammary incision made below the breast is discreet yet allows the placement of larger silicone or gummy bear implants without requiring a large visible scar following treatment. In other instances, patients opt for peri-areolar incisions in order to hide the resulting scar with the edge of the areola.

More Implant Options

Final results that look and feel natural are primarily determined by the type, shape and size on implant a patient selects. Much like surgical placement and incision, earlier forms of breast augmentation surgery offered patients only a few options to choose from.

Today, patients today have an array of implants to choose from. Starting with the filling type, patients can choose from options like saline, silicone and “gummy bear”, which each offer their own advantages and can look fantastic on any figure. Beyond implant type, patients also have expanded options when it comes to determining size – for some, the bigger the better, while others may opt for more subtle enhancement. Regardless of what your ultimate goals are, rest assured that you have plenty of options to select from in order to achieve your ideal figure.

There’s no doubt that being a mom is a rewarding experience. But all too often, we forget the toll that pregnancy and childbirth can take on woman’s body. Hips become wider while skin and muscles in the abdomen stretch out. After giving birth, post-partum bodies can continue to change, especially if a woman decides to breastfeed. Combined with shifting priorities, physical changes to a woman’s figure can easily take a toll on their self-confidence.

To help support a woman’s ongoing efforts to achieve their pre-baby body, certain cosmetic treatment plans like a mommy makeover are designed to help women restore their figures and self-confidence.  Here’s how:

Targets the Impacts of Pregnancy

As no two pregnancies are exactly alike, mommy makeovers are highly customized to help target the areas affected by each woman’s pregnancy. For some, this can mean their mommy makeover is a combination of abdominoplasty and breast lift. For others, the perfect mommy makeover includes tummy tuck plus non-invasive facial treatments. At Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, our goal in crafting highly personalized surgical strategies is to ensure that the results comprehensively address each woman’s concerns.

Enhance Current Efforts

For countless post-partum women, diet and exercise are important first steps in restoring pre-baby bodies. While these efforts can certainly make a difference, they may not be enough to fully address all of changes caused by childbirth. Mommy makeover procedures like liposuction and abdominoplasty can help women achieve their desired goals faster as well as accentuate their hard work in the gym.

Feel Comfortable in All Clothes

For many women, mommy makeover isn’t just about restoring their pre-baby figure – it’s also about being able to feel comfortable in your body regardless of what you’re wearing. Depending on the degree of skin or muscles stretching, mommy makeover strategies can be developed to include different body contouring procedures that ensure clothes fit just as well if not better than before.

Feel Sexy Again

Self-confidence plays a large role in any person’s ability to feel sexy and attractive. For post-partum women struggling to feel comfortable in their new bodies, feeling attractive can seem even more unattainable. Mommy makeovers are designed to target unwanted sagging or stretched skin, help women achieve their pre-baby bodies and pre-baby levels of self-confidence.

Invest in Yourself

Being a mom is a full-time job, starting before your baby is even born For many women, life after children takes on a new focus where hours spent at the gym are now spent at Mommy and Me classes or shuttling kids off to extracurricular activities. In that time, it can become easy for women to lose their identity as someone beyond a mother. For some women, investing in a mommy makeover is viewed as the first step toward redefining themselves and regaining their sense of self. The resulting decision can be a serious confidence booster that leads to more choices that benefit not only the individual, but their entire family.

Rebuild Self-Confidence at Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery

From consultation through recovery and follow-up, the plastic surgeons at BHPS are committed to helping all individuals feel confident in their appearance. Getting older takes a toll on a person’s appearance. Diminished collagen and the damage caused by environmental factors and gravity can all cause skin to sag across the face. Beyond the characteristic fine lines and wrinkles that come with age, sagging skin around the eyelids can be an especially noticeable sign that you’re getting older. Luckily, many patients are now opting for blepharoplasty – eyelid surgery – and enjoying natural looking results.

As with any potential surgery, the treatment doesn’t quite end with the actual completion of your surgery. For many patients, there are just as many questions about recovery from eyelid surgery as there are about the procedure itself. At Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, our goal is to help patients understand all aspects of their procedure from start to finish.  To help patients better understand the recovery side of eyelid surgery, we’ve pulled together some of the top questions we get about the procedure and its recovery:

Does eyelid surgery require an overnight hospital stay?

Barring any complications, most eyelid surgeries are conducted as an outpatient procedure from our office in Beverly Hills. As patients are given a mild sedative for the procedure, we require that patients have a family member or friend help them get home after treatment.

When can I get back to work after blepharoplasty?

While blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive surgery, it is a form of surgery nonetheless. At Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, we recommend patients stay home for the first three to four days following surgery and avoid highly physical activities like lifting or exercise for the first few weeks following their procedure. We also recommend that you sleep with your head raised on multiple pillows for the first two weeks following your procedure to avoid excess swelling.

Will I have visible scars after eyelid surgery?

As the treatment involved removing excess skin from eyelids, there are incisions required with eyelid surgery. During recovery, the surgical sites may look swollen and bruised and can (quite honestly) a bit scary to see immediately after surgery. However, our plastic surgeons are experts in their field. By using the latest techniques and tools, our doctors minimize scarring along so that any incisions are virtually invisible. Any sutures that are placed are usually removed about a week following your procedure.

When can I wear contacts and make-up?

To protect the surgical site and reduce the risk of post-op infection, our surgeons ask that patients avoid wearing contacts for at least two weeks after surgery. While you’re welcome to use facial creams or lotions elsewhere on your face, avoid applying anything to your eyes for at least two weeks following treatment.

How long will my results last?

One of the best benefits of eyelid surgery is how long the treatment lasts. With proper care, patients can enjoy natural looking results permanently without requiring retreatment.

Breast augmentation has long been one of the top requested plastic surgeries by women across the country. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, breast augmentations in 2018 reached over 310,000 procedures – an estimated rise of 48% since 2000. In recent years, new techniques as well as implant devices have made the treatment even easier for patients to achieve renewed confidence in their appearance.

While the procedure is easily one of the best known and most common, there are still a number of questions and misconceptions that surround the treatment. At Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, our goal is to dispel these questions so that patients know what to expect with this procedure. If you’re thinking of enhancing your current appearance with breast augmentation, consider the facts behind these common misconceptions.

All implants are the same

False. There are several different implant options patients can choose from, depending on their desired final look. In addition to choosing the type of implant option (saline, silicone or gummy bear), patients can choose from several different implant shapes. During your consultation, our surgeons work with each woman to identify the perfect implant type and shape that will help them enhance their figure without looking unnatural.

Implants need to be replaced every 10 years

Somewhat true. Like any other medical prosthetic, implants are not designed to last forever. Breast implants can rupture, leak or excessive scar tissue can develop around the implant, which can then lead to secondary complications. However, the longevity of an implant ranges tremendously based on the individual. Routine check-ups with your plastic surgeon can help identify potential problems before they happen and ensure you can enjoy your new figure for as long as possible.

Breast implants increase the risk of autoimmune disease

As breast implants have spent more time on the market, more studies have been conducted to determine the impact of breast implants on the long-term health of women. Thus far, these studies have not shown a link between implants and autoimmune disease. One recent study however has shown an association between breast implants and a rare form of lymphoma.

If you have breast implants, you can’t breast feed

False. Most augmentation surgeries place the implant behind the pectoral muscles using an inframammary fold. This incision allows the implant to be placed completely away from the breast, leave all necessary milk ducts intact. When the incision is done through the areola, patients may notice some interference with milk supply. For women concerned about the implant’s silicone leaching into the milk, not to worry – today’s implants are unlikely to leach into breast milk.

All breast augmentation surgeons are the same

Definitely false. Just like choosing the best procedure for your body can take some time, finding the right specialist requires doing some explorations. A great plastic surgeon with extensive experience placing breast implants can make a substantial difference in how your final treatment looks and lasts. At Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, Dr. David and Dr. Eugene Kim have completed rigorous training to stay versed in the best surgical techniques and options.
