Breast Lift Risks And Safety

Breast Lift Risks And Safety

Posted on March 2, 2018

Breast Lift Risks And SafetyBreast lift cosmetic surgery is generally a low risk procedure. However, certain risks are associated with all kinds of surgeries, including breast lift. It is important to choose a skilled an experienced surgeon to reduce these risks as well as follow the surgeon’s guidelines before and after the surgery.

The patient should share her medical history with the surgeon and adhere to the care instructions for the preparation and recovery phase. Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, led by plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim, provides breast lift to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Infection Risk

With a focus on hygiene and cleanliness standards, the risk of infection after a surgery can be reduced significantly. However, there still exists some risk of infection after a breast lift. Some key indications of an infection are:

  • Fever
  • Pus
  • Redness
  • Significant or worsening inflammation
  • Skin that feels warm when touched
  • Severe pain

Hematoma and Bleeding

In certain unusual cases, the patient may bleed uncontrollably during or after a breast lift plastic surgery procedure. In a majority of the cases, this occurs due to an underlying medical condition or certain blood thinning medications that the patient may be taking.

Sometimes the blood lost in the course of the surgery collects under the skin, which is known as hematoma. Though this risk exists in almost every major surgery, a surgeon can address it with a narrow drain place just beneath the skin.

Poor Reaction to Anesthesia

A few patients do not respond well anesthesia or sedation. An anesthesiologist will closely observe the patient’s reaction to the anesthetic drug during the surgery. They can also alter the anesthesia levels during the procedure to ensure that the patient remains safe and comfortable.

Poor Recovery

At times, both sides of an incision may not heal simultaneously causing the tissues on either side to die. This risk commonly occurs in patients who choose conventional anchor breast lift technique or those who smoke. To correct this complication, the surgeon will trim the dead tissue and place sutures on either side of the incision again.

Loss of Sensation

The surgeon will reposition the areola and nipple during the surgery. This creates a small possibility that the patient will experience a loss of sensation in these sites. This complication is quite rare as the surgeon does not detach the tissues from the nerves beneath.

The loss of sensation in the breasts right after the surgery is not cause for concern as temporary numbness is a known side effect of a breast lift surgery.

Undesirable Aesthetic Outcome

Most patients are happy with the outcome of a breast lift surgery. But in a few cases, the breasts may appear uneven after the breast lift. Some patients may also be unsatisfied with the reshaped areolas. In most of these cases, surgeons address the issue with a revision surgery.

However, when patients choose a highly skilled and experienced surgeon, the risk of poor aesthetic results is minimized. Experienced cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and nearby areas across the landscape for breast lift surgery.
