Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as nose reshaping surgery, is a popular cosmetic surgery designed to improve the shape or size of the nose in harmony with other facial features. Rhinoplasty is primarily used to enhance nose aesthetics, but may also be performed to correct functional problems such as nasal airway obstructions.

Congenital nose deformities and nose injuries can be correct with reconstructive rhinoplasty, while previous surgery can be improved with revision rhinoplasty procedures.

Ethnic rhinoplasty may be performed for patients with specific ethnic nasal characteristics. Impressive and committed ABPS plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides rhinoplasty to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations in this part of SoCal.

Candidacy

Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)People who are unhappy with their existing shape or size of the nose, and want to achieve cosmetic corrections such as reduction or increase in the size of the nose, refining the nasal tip, removing a bump from the nose bridge, narrowing the nostril span, or altering the angle between the nose and the upper lip, can be good candidates for rhinoplasty plastic surgery.

Patients with nose injury, birth defects or breathing issues through the nostrils can also benefit from rhinoplasty. An ideal candidate will have a positive state of mind, clear goals, and realistic expectations. The candidate should ideally be above the age of 18, but in specific cases, teenagers may be considered for rhinoplasty.

Procedure

Rhinoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, but in exceptionally complex cases, the patient may need a short in-patient stay at the surgical facility. Depending on the extent of surgery involved, the procedure may be performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with light sedation. The procedure is usually completed in less than two hours.

Open and closed techniques can be used to perform rhinoplasty. If only limited corrections to the nose are involved, the surgeon may recommend closed rhinoplasty. This can be performed by placing small incisions inside the nostrils. The advantage is that no scarring will be visible on the outside, and the surgeon will perform the corrections through the incisions within the nostrils.

However, if significant modifications to the nose shape or size are involved, the surgeon may have to choose open rhinoplasty. This will require a small incision of about 4 to 5 mm to be placed on the columella, which is the thin strip dividing the nostrils.

Through this discreetly placed incision, in addition to tiny incisions within the nostrils, the surgeon will manipulate the tissue, cartilage and bone to make the required improvements to the nose appearance.

Dr. Kim will prefer to adopt closed technique when only minor improvement such as mitigating a nose bump is required. But if nose tip requires reshaping or another major surgery such as nose augmentation or reduction is involved, he will choose the open approach to have better surgical exposure. Accomplished cosmetic surgeon Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and nearby areas for rhinoplasty.

Most patients will be able to return to their normal routine in about one week after rhinoplasty. However, full establishment of results and complete recovery will require several weeks.
